Listen to some of the best new recordings here.

  • Classical Music: 2021 was a year of reawakening for the art form.
  • Jazz Albums: Even the big-statement albums this year had a feeling of intense closeness.
  • Pop Albums: Recordings with big feelings and room for catharsis made the most powerful connections.
  • Best Songs: A posthumous political statement and a superstar’s 10-minute redo are among the 66 best tracks of 2021.
  • We’re just stopping touring, and stopping producing albums.”įrom Lil Nas X to Mozart to Esperanza Spalding here is what we loved listening to this year. “We don’t have any problems in the band,” Janove Ottesen, the group’s singer and principal composer, said in a Skype interview from Stavanger on Friday. After a run of European festivals and nine valedictory performances in Stavanger, where it is based, Kaizers Orchestra is packing it in - or at least taking an open-ended break. And while most groups’ debuts are introductions meant to build new audiences, the Kaizers’ Met performance - its only American date - is also its farewell. The group, a Norwegian alternative-rock sextet whose music is an idiosyncratic amalgam of Scandinavian and Eastern European folk influences filtered through high-energy blues and metal, has had big musical ambitions: its last three albums were installments of “Violeta, Violeta,” a complex rock-opera that involves a dysfunctional family, Satan, vodka and a hefty dose of magical realism (a mother and daughter who can communicate only in dreams, for example).īut though it has a huge following in Scandinavia and devoted audiences elsewhere in Europe, the group is virtually unknown in the United States, probably because it performs only in Norwegian. This album will only be sold for one week in May 2009.As high-profile debuts go, the circumstances could hardly be odder for Kaizers Orchestra’s first American performance, on Thursday evening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The album titled Våre demoner, consists of surplus material from each of their previous studio albums. The band was supposed to only do some touring in 2009, but they decided to make an album just for their core fans. The album title was Maskineri and it was released in February 2008 and followed by a major tour. The fourth album was recorded in Berlin, assisted by producer/engineer Mark Howard. Their October 5th and 6th, 2005 performances at Vega in Copenhagen, were recorded for a live DVD, titled "Viva La Vega" released in 2006. The third album, Maestro was released in 2005 on their own label in Norway and by Universal Germany for rest of Europe, taking them from one of the smallest labels to one of the biggest. Again the band toured extensively in Norway and got a good grip on the European venue circuit.

The second album "Evig pint" was released in February 2003. "Ompa til du dør" also made Kaizers Orchestra the highest-selling rock debut to be released in the Norwegian language. The album won a Spellemannpris (Norwegian Grammy) for "best rock album", as well as two Alarm-awards. The album went double platinum in Norway with 100 000 copies. It was critically acclaimed and became a success, first in Norway, later in Denmark and the Netherlands. Their first album, "Ompa til du dør", was released on this small label in September 2001. Kaizers Orchestra's special sound and creative use of instruments was noticed by a small Norwegian indie label. During by:Larm, a Norwegian festival focusing on up-and-coming artists, the band's songs were played frequently on the radio.
